The Paper Behind the Print: Why the Materials I Choose Make Every Work Worth Collecting

Every photograph reaches a point where it must decide what it will become.

On a screen, an image is transient—backlit, weightless, easily replaced. As a print, it becomes an object with presence, with permanence, and with value that endures. This transformation is not incidental; it is shaped, in large part, by the paper itself.

I work exclusively with handmade and mold-made fine art papers, selecting each one with intention. From French mold-made 100% cotton papers to handmade Japanese washi, these materials are not simply substrates—they are integral to the final work, influencing how the image is seen, felt, and preserved over time. They are also part of what makes these prints worthy investments for serious collectors.

The United States is also a producer of fine handmade 100% cotton papers. Recently I have been testing Twinrocker Watercolor and select ultra thin teabag papers.

French Mold-Made 100% Cotton Papers: Enduring Elegance

French mold-made cotton papers are among the most revered materials in fine art printing. Made using traditional techniques from 100% cotton fiber, these acid-free, archival sheets are engineered to last for generations without yellowing, fading, or degradation.

Their subtle, velvety surface holds tonal depth with exceptional richness—allowing gradations to unfold slowly, inviting the viewer to look longer and more closely. For collectors, this means a work that not only commands presence on the wall today, but remains stable and visually true for decades to come.

Prints produced on French cotton paper represent the highest tier of my practice. Each print is individually produced, numbered, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Edition sizes are intentionally limited—typically between 5 and 25 prints per image—ensuring that every work retains its rarity and long-term collectible value. Pricing begins at $450 for smaller formats, scaling with size and edition scarcity, with large-format statement pieces ranging from $1,200 to $3,500 and above.

Japanese Washi Paper: Singular Objects, Handcrafted by Tradition

Handmade Japanese washi paper offers a different, equally compelling experience. Crafted from natural plant fibers using centuries-old techniques, washi possesses a luminous, almost breathing quality. Its textures are irregular, organic, and alive—no two sheets are ever exactly alike.

Light does not simply rest on washi's surface; it moves through it. When an image is printed on washi, it transcends reproduction. It becomes a one-of-a-kind object—something intimate and tactile, where the photograph and the paper exist in a relationship that cannot be replicated.

Because each sheet of washi is unique, prints made on this paper are produced in the smallest editions—often just 3 to 10 per image—making them among the most exclusive works in my portfolio. Washi prints range from $600 for intimate formats to $4,500 for larger, museum-ready works. Each is signed, numbered, and accompanied by a full certificate of authenticity.

Bespoke by Design: What You're Really Investing In

My process is intentionally bespoke. Each image is paired with a paper that complements its tone, subject, and emotional weight. You are not purchasing a print-on-demand product. You are acquiring a handcrafted object, produced in a limited edition, using archival materials chosen specifically for that image—by the artist who made it.

Every print I offer is produced with long-term collectibility in mind:

  • Archival materials — All papers are acid-free and rated for 100+ years of display stability

  • Limited editions — Small, defined edition sizes protect the value and rarity of each work

  • Signed and numbered — Each print is hand-signed and numbered in pencil by the artist

  • Certificate of authenticity — Included with every purchase, documenting the edition, paper, and print specifications

  • Professional installation guidance — Available upon request for framing and display recommendations
