The humble artichoke — bold colors and an unusual form that many have not grown or seen in person. I'm originally from Pennsylvania, and this was one of the first "ah, ha" moment plants I grew in New Mexico. I never thought that I would be able to actually grow an artichoke in my garden. Guess what! A bold piece of art for your home or office, for sure. It is a single artichoke, blossomed, with a beautiful tufted blue-purple crown, the choke leaves slightly opened. A straight dark green stem, three serrated leaves — and the textures make it look very ancient. The gilded background is a deep purple red, vignetted so the eye lands on the flower. Across the bottom runs a line of olde French script — nothing legible. That's intentional: the eye starts to read, and lands on feeling instead. It is printed in archival pigment ink on vellum, then gilded on the reverse with Dutch gold leaf through a series of steps in my Rio Rancho, New Mexico studio. The gold behind the image gives the print a glow that shifts with the light in the room.
