Bachelor Buttons — or cornflowers, if you prefer — were a beautiful addition to the garden. Delicate and colorful, they kept the bees, butterflies, and every other pollinator fed all season. Even the hummingbirds loved them. And once they finished flowering, the western goldfinches moved in and devoured the seeds. Now, that is worth planting.
Luminous Bachelor Buttons is printed in archival pigment ink on vellum, then gilded on the reverse with Dutch gold leaf through a series of steps in my Rio Rancho, New Mexico studio. The gold behind the image gives the print a glow that shifts with the light in the room.
This one sits a bit more romantic than some of my others — I played with the focus and composition until it suited how I see these beauties.
