The flower holds the center of the frame, about a third of the way down; the long daylily leaves cut through the composition as dark shadows, running from middle bottom to top right; the faint outline of a glass vase anchors the bottom-left corner. Behind them all, a deep red-magenta ground — and across the top of the print, three lines of script in magenta, barely perceptible: the opening of a Victorian poem, hand-copied. "My heart" and "earth" are the words that survive the distance.
Luminous Daylily is printed in archival pigment ink on vellum, then gilded on the reverse with Dutch gold leaf through a series of steps in my Rio Rancho, New Mexico studio. The gold behind the image gives the print a glow that shifts with the light in the room.
The poem is Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "My Heart and I" — "In this abundant earth no doubt / Is little room for things worn out." A Victorian lament about the world making little room for worn-out things, set behind the world's most indefatigable rebloomer. Make of that what you will.
The flower is Stella de Oro — "Star of Gold" — the most popular reblooming daylily in cultivation, and in this print she earns the name: glowing like a lamp in a dark room.
In the Victorian language of flowers, the daylily means flirtation — one blossom showing off while another waits behind it. Fitting for a rebloomer: she'll be back.
