She first appeared in the garden and the name arrived with her: Lush. That was my first impression, and it never left.
She is a magenta-pink gladiola of almost unreasonable delicacy — two thin sprays rising from a single cylinder vase, thread-thin leaves, blooms that open in a delicate rose and deepen to the darkest magenta at their edges. Almost unworldly. The paradox is the point: the thinnest plant in the garden, and somehow the most lush.
Luminous Lush is printed in archival pigment ink on vellum, then gilded on the reverse with Dutch gold leaf through a series of steps in my Rio Rancho, New Mexico studio. The gold behind the image gives the print a glow that shifts with the light in the room.
There is a lot of gilding on this one — the entire ground is gold. The Dutch gold leaf is laid in small rectangles, and up close their edges reveal themselves as a subtle rectangular pattern across the field. The association for me is a Chinese lacquer piece: a deep, warm surface that keeps its own quiet geometry. From across the room, a golden glow with two blooms hovering; up close, you can see the pieces it was made from.
In the Victorian language of flowers, the gladiolus stands for strength of character — and botanically it is a "sword lily," a heavy reputation for something this thin. It fits: nothing about Lush is fragile except its structure.
She has shown in galleries, but she has never made the catalog — this is her debut.
