A short video on the making of this image
I just love sunflowers. This past season, I planted sunflower seeds almost everywhere. Sometimes I even just scattered them around the garden. Here are two very large ones in a heavy crystal vase. The blossoms are deeply yellow with a hint of orange, rising above the vase, mostly on the right side of the image. One head is tilted away from the camera, slightly down, looking away. The other is tipped up, almost directly at the viewer — more in focus, and perky. Fresh green phyllaries crown the flowerheads, a beautiful partial surround. The heavy crystal vase sits slightly out of focus in the bottom right corner, and a golden, slightly browned vignette closes the whole frame in. It is printed in archival pigment ink on vellum, then gilded on the reverse with Dutch gold leaf through a series of steps in my Rio Rancho, New Mexico studio. The gold behind the image gives the print a glow that shifts with the light in the room. In the Victorian language of flowers, the sunflower means adoration and loyal devotion — fitting for a flower that spends its whole life following light. The mammoth varieties just take that devotion straight up. Dedicated to Ukraine's sovereignty.
