Vibrant red oleander blossoms — brilliant, almost fluorescent — rise from a tall glass cylinder vase, five or six intensely green leaves extending down into the water line. The bright, cheerful yellow background dramatically enhances the piece, making it truly stand out in any setting. Grown in my front yard in New Mexico. These gilded vellums love light bouncing around a room.
Near the bottom of the print, a line of Tennyson floats in light purple script: "Now sleeps the crimson petal … waken thou with me" .
Oleander is famously toxic — every part of the plant — which may be why it shrugs off everything a New Mexico front yard can throw at it."
Luminous Oleander is printed in archival pigment ink on vellum, then gilded on the reverse with Dutch gold leaf through a series of steps in my Rio Rancho, New Mexico studio. There's a ton of gilding on this print.
