A very graphic, unopened pine cone, found on a trail in the Cibola National Forest in New Mexico — and one of my favorites. The scales are dark chocolate-brown, lit cream-gold, with small pale stars where they meet — sculptural, almost architectural. Behind it, a green-golden field, brightest at the center, mottled darker toward the edges, vignetted to near-black. Across the top runs a line of olde French script, in cream gold — nothing legible. That's intentional: the eye starts to read, and lands on feeling instead. Luminous Pine Cone is printed in archival pigment ink on vellum, then gilded on the reverse with Dutch gold leaf through a series of steps in my Rio Rancho, New Mexico studio. The gold behind the image gives the print a glow that shifts with the light in the room.
