Tintype Workshop Day 1

Topics to Cover

  • Safety

  • Chemistry Involved

  • Cameras, lenses and all possible imaging equipment Involved

  • Lighting: Strobes, Daylight, Continuous

  • Demonstrations of Shooting Methods including focus, posing, backgrounds.

  • Demonstrations of the dark box, pouring plates, shooting, developing, clearing, drying [varnishing later]

  • Students practice pouring plates

  • Students pair up to shoot & model::then switch roles

  • Lots of shooting, pouring & processing with instructions along the way.

  • Recap, demonstration of varnishing, varnishing and packing up student plates.

  • PDF handout recap of tintypes, suppliers, online/Facebook groups to know. Kevin’s private online group invite.

Tintype Workshop Day 2

  • Recap & Q+A of Day 1

  • Demonstrations for solutions to problems with previous plates

  • Shoot some more

  • Specific subject matter questions answered: Lenses, chemistry changes, cameras, formats & lighting for portraits, still life, landscapes.

  • Student specific goals: Is this to develop a business, an artistic practice or for fun + experimentation ?

  • How to set up tintype practice, sources, best practices, best pricing for supplies, how to charge, how to display

  • Learn specifics for black glass ambrotypes [tintypes on glass] Shoot a few ambrotypes on colored glass

  • Make more plates during the day, use different cameras, get an advanced feel and how to relax into the process

  • What to look for in equipment, considerations for shooting outdoors

  • Varnish new student plates and pack up!

  • Final questions, considerations.
